Bob Goff said this in his insightful book Love Does,
I HEARD ABOUT JESUS FOR THE FIRST TIME WHEN I AS IN HIGH SCHOOL FROM A GUY NAMED DOUG, WHO I USED TO SHOOT BB GUNS WITH. WE WOULD GO OUT IN THE WOODS BY A RESERVOIR AND SHOOT AT CANS AND OLD CAR FENDERS. NEITHER OF US WAS A VERY GOOD SHOT AND WE RARELY HIT WHAT WE AIMED FOR, SO WE JUST CALLED WHATEVER WE HIT THE TARGET.
And then he added:
THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO STILL DO THAT.
I read that and it stopped me down. Do I hit my targets or do I simply draw targets around my hits?
Drawing targets around hits will make us feel like a success. And so we tell our kids, and ourselves, “It’s not important what you do; It’s only important how you feel.”
Nobody seems to consider the long-term implications of this silliness.
Sooner or later I must learn to hit a target.
If I target my hits then I’ll never learn to hit anything, and we live in a world that really wants you to be able to hit something. Eventually, that’s going to make me feel a lot worse than if I had taken the time to learn to hit the target.
Did it ever occur to you that you might feel better about yourself if you could hit a target?
This is true of work, marriage, family, and it is especially true of spiritual things. Don’t drift through life pretending that your spiritual misses are actually hits. Take aim. Steady yourself. Fix your eyes on the target and spend your life learning to hit it.
Here are a couple of verses that might help with this:
PHILIPPIANS 3:12 NOT THAT I HAVE ALREADY OBTAINED IT OR HAVE ALREADY BECOME PERFECT, BUT I PRESS ON SO THAT I MAY LAY HOLD OF THAT FOR WHICH ALSO I WAS LAID HOLD OF BY CHRIST JESUS. 13 BRETHREN, I DO NOT REGARD MYSELF AS HAVING LAID HOLD OF IT YET; BUT ONE THING I DO: FORGETTING WHAT LIES BEHIND AND REACHING FORWARD TO WHAT LIES AHEAD, 14 I PRESS ON TOWARD THE GOAL FOR THE PRIZE OF THE UPWARD CALL OF GOD IN CHRIST JESUS.
1 CORINTHIANS 9: 26 THEREFORE I RUN IN SUCH A WAY, AS NOT WITHOUT AIM; I BOX IN SUCH A WAY, AS NOT BEATING THE AIR; 27 BUT I DISCIPLINE MY BODY AND MAKE IT MY SLAVE, SO THAT, AFTER I HAVE PREACHED TO OTHERS, I MYSELF WILL NOT BE DISQUALIFIED.
